Finding Pierre Morlet’s Blanc de Blancs is like discovering that the Beatles recorded a secret album in between Abbey Road and Let It Be. This is Morlet’s top-secret bottling: It’s the first time in five generations that the Morlet family has crafted this special wine, and it’s buzzing with the same vinosity and detail that hooked us on Morlet Champagnes from the moment we first tried them at The French Laundry.
The Morlet name is monumental on this side of the Atlantic, mainly because of Luc Morlet’s 100-point Napa Valley Cabs and 100-point Sonoma whites. But the California chapter is just the latest in a long family history: The Morlets have been crafting Champagne in France since the 1800s.
Auguste Morlet, Luc’s great-great grandfather, planted the family’s first vineyard and sold his grapes to the region’s grandes marques. Auguste’s son Gaston created the Champagne Pierre Morlet label, naming it after his only child, who showed an intense interest in viticulture and œnology.
It was Pierre’s grandson Luc (the Cabernet wizard now famous for his 100-point California icons) who reinstated his grandfather’s practice of utilizing French oak barrels for the primary fermentation and aging of the family’s Champagnes. Today, Luc’s brother Paulin oversees the vineyards and winemaking, and Champagne Pierre Morlet et Fils has earned a reputation that rivals the best in the region.
This is a Champagne fit for the greatest restaurants in the world—and that’s where most will have to go to find it. But Wine Access members can get it right here.
