Mariano Garcia is one of Spain’s unassailable icons.
During his 30 years at Vega Sicilia, the winery grew from a regional notable to the TOWERING icon we know today. His $150 Aalto reds are highly coveted, and wines like his 1968 Vega Sicilia Unico Gran Reserva—the first vintage he made—now trade for $2,500.
In 2020, Garcia and his sons crafted the 2020 Garmon Continental Garmon, Vinous’s #1 Ribera of the vintage and their #2 red in all of Spain. From coveted 100+ year-old vines, it’s a pure Ribera masterclass: dense and ruby-black, expansive and rich, energetic and detailed, walking stride for stride with the very best of the category. As our Master Sommelier Sur Lucero said, “This producer’s got ICON written all over it.”
The Garcias source grapes from a remarkable six different villages for this one cuvée, drawing fruit from Anguix, Baños de Valdearados, La Aguilera, Moradillo, Quintanilla de Onésimo, and Tubilla del Lago. They’re after intense fruit, powerful structure, and mesmerizing complexity, and the vineyards they tap are ancient across the board.
2020 was rated an “Excellent” vintage according to the Regulatory Board of the Ribera del Duero D.O., despite occasional bouts of rain. Once the hand-harvested grapes were brought into the winery, the team at Garmón allowed them to ferment with native yeasts, pumping the must over daily for ideal extraction.
The 2020 was aged for 20 months in exclusively French oak barrels—the exceptional Tonnellerie Cadus is a favored cooper here, and it shows in the sophistication of the finished wine. Tim Atkin MW wrote that the 2020 “deserves its reputation as one of the region’s very best releases.”
