2020 Domaine Rene Malleron Clos du Roy Sancerre

As such, we’ve tasted a ton of Loire Sauvignon Blanc stunners—which means that if a new bottle’s going to impress us, it’s GOT to grab us by the lapels and not let go.

That’s exactly what the 2020 Domaine Rene Malleron Clos du Roy Sancerre did when we first tasted it over a spectacular lunch.

What’s most striking about Malleron’s bottle—something the Sancerre obsessives will pick up on from the first sip—is the texture. Yes, this wine has the flinty minerality and floral bouquet. Yes, it’s got the straight line of bright, clean flavors and zippy acidity. But Malleron’s bottle is bolstered with a lush ripeness—and combined with all of the above, it equals Sancerre at its most seductive. 

We chalk up this bottle’s fantastic mouthfeel to the inimitable, natural amphitheater–shaped hillsides in the south-central Loire village of Crézancy: The parcel of vines that delivers Domaine René Malleron’s Sancerre is treated to a warmth that promotes fuller ripening, compared to its neighbors on the outskirts of this partially protected site. The vines dig into Kimmeridgian soils—the same clay-limestone terroir rich with sea fossils that makes Chablis so magical.

We first tasted this bottle at a working lunch at Nobu, where it paired perfectly with the marvelous, Asian-inspired cuisine: bluefin tuna tartare, uni tacos, king crab tempura, and more. We were smitten down to the last drop—so we knew we had to secure this wine for our members. We know you’ll love it as much as we do.
