“Chianti Classico is certainly the most dynamic and exciting wine region in Italy today.”
Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate is all-in on Tuscany’s most famous region, and we feel the same way: The bottles we’re tasting from Chianti Classico might pack more pleasure and quality than any other region in Europe.
But even for the region, the 2020 Canonica a Cerreto Chianti Classico offers exceptional value. Made by Matteo Bernabei, one of the most pedigreed winemakers in Tuscany, Canonica a Cerreto hails from the same commune that produces legends like Castello di Bossi, Felsina, and San Felice. It hails from one of the best Tuscan vintages of the decade—a warm season that produced wines with silky tannins and drink-now personalities—and it’s gonna thrill you all year.
Fruity and earthy on the nose, mouth-filling but not heavy, this bottling bears the signature of the highly-regarded Castelnuovo Berardenga subzone and of its maker, Matteo Bernabei, one of the foremost Sangiovese specialists in the world. The son of the famed winemaker Franco Bernabei, who helped put Selvapiana, Fontodi, and Felsina on the map, Matteo carries on his father’s legacy in impressive fashion.
Canonica a Cerreto’s estate in Castelnuovo Berardenga dates back as far as 1000 CE. The grapes were grown on hillside slopes where the vines benefit from warm, sunny days. The site cools down dramatically after sunset, resulting in an excellent balance between juicy fruit and vibrant acidity.
This bottle checks every box for us. It’s why we stock up every year, and why you’ll be glad you did too.
