During the mid-19th century, resourceful immigrants came to California hoping to make their fortunes in the Gold Rush. Many settled in Sonoma’s Dry Creek Valley, where they discovered a treasure of a different kind: the area’s incredible capacity for cultivating wine— especially Zinfandel.

The pull of great Zinfandel never abated. Today legends like Ridge Lytton Springs and Rafanelli have cemented the AVA’s position as THE top growing region in the world for Zinfandel

Vintner David Eckert is among the latest generation of treasure-hunters tap into Dry Creek Valley. In 2012, after learning winemaking at UC Davis and interning with the legendary Daniel Baron of Silver Oak, he established ZO Wines with the mission of rekindling Zin’s historic legacy.

This 2019 Triple-Ten Zinfandel, hailing from Eckert’s three acres of 20-year old Zinfandel vines—a prime alluvial terroir on the other side of Dry Creek from neighbor Rafanelli. It’s a lush, bold, and exquisitely balanced 2019 that offers a fascinating glimpse of California’s past, interpreted through a modern lens.

ZO’s Triple Ten is Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel done to perfection, combining the complexity and utter drinkability that we look for in California’s top expressions of the grape. It’s a testament to Eckert’s mastery in both the vineyard and the cellar, revealing all the reasons why Dry Creek has been a holy ground for Zinfandel for over 150 years.

“This one checks all the boxes,” one member said. We couldn’t resist the wine’s bountiful aromas of plum, bramble, and violet, which give way to touches of summer peach and vanilla. The mouthfeel is so juicy, with plenty of concentrated fruit, perfect with fare like grilled tomahawk ribeyes drizzled with chimichurri!
