2019 Ragtag Wine Co. Chardonnay Morro View Vineyard Edna Valley

The call came in from one of our members—but it wasn’t the sort of call we usually expect.

It wasn’t a customer service request, but a shot at first access to ten gorgeous barrels of single-vineyard Chardonnay—at an exclusive discount.

See, the vintners at Ragtag Wine Co. are loyal Wine Access members (and buyers), and with a small allocation to offer, they thought of us. And when we tasted their 2019 Morro View Chardonnay, we locked in every bottle they’d let us have. Bold and rich, it’s an impressive wine that will absolutely THRILL lovers of bold Chardonnays like Rombauer, Kistler, and Grand Sonnerie. 

Morro View is a star vineyard in the Edna Valley, a cool coastal appellation just south of San Luis Obispo. The region is blessed with abundant sunshine, but also plenty of cold wind whipping off of the Pacific—Morrow View is just five miles from the ocean. 

That combination makes for one of the longest growing seasons in California, which means that winemaker Jeff Huskey can let his Chardonnay ripen fully on the vine…and then keep on waiting some more, confident that he can develop decadent fruit flavors and plenty of texture while keeping the finished wine bright and crisp.

Once he brings in the beautiful bunches of Chardonnay grapes, Jeff applies a vinification protocol that would be familiar to any veteran of the best Chardonnay houses in Napa and Sonoma. The wine is fermented in barrel—20% new—and then aged for over a year, with bâtonnage every six weeks. That combination of longer aging and lees-stirring develops texture and a rich mouthfeel, while a partial blocking of malolactic fermentation helps keep the wine refreshing.
