2019 Quinta do Noval Touriga Nacional Douro Portugal

Quinta do Noval’s Touriga Nacional—a dry, under-the-radar Portuguese red—delivers the same quality, depth, and ageworthiness we expect from Old World greats in Bordeaux, Tuscany, and Piedmont, but for about a quarter of the price. 

It’s grown on what is arguably the finest estate in the Douro, from the same vineyards that produce Noval’s $1,100+ Nacional Port. What’s more, it’s from 2019, a vintage so great that they made it a declared year for the Nacional. Director Christian Seely said, “The purity, complexity and character of the 2019s reflect these ideal conditions.” 

It’s made entirely from Touriga Nacional, Portugal’s most noble grape, which produces well-structured and full-bodied wines. Wine Enthusiast has called it “Portugal’s Answer to Cabernet” for its intricacy and ageability.  Yet this 2019 is no mere imitation. It’s “remarkably elegant, showing fine finesse, but it never lacks an expression of fruit,” according to Wine Advocate.  

Quinta do Noval is one of the most venerable houses of the region, having farmed near the town of Pinhão since the early 1700s. Their vines grow on steep slopes that rise up to 1,600 feet above the Douro River, at a range of exposures and elevations that make for a seriously intricate wine. And unlike most of the estates there, all of Noval’s wines are made entirely from estate-grown grapes.
