The Southern Rhône is one of the very best places a red-wine lover can find amazing values and nab a damn respectable everyday Côtes-du-Rhône.
However, the 2019 Famille Perrin Les Cornuds Vinsobres is anything BUT an everyday Côtes-du-Rhône.
Crafted by the quality-obsessed Perrin clan—the family behind the iconic Château de Beaucastel—it’s grown on terraced, biodynamically farmed hillside vines in the northernmost pocket of the Southern Rhone, and this beauty holds its own with Gigondas or Vacqueyras.
What’s more, it’s from an excellent vintage. Decanter rated it 4.5 out of five, calling it “powerful, ripe, but in places thrillingly vibrant,” and Rhône expert Jeb Dunnuck said “In my mind, 2019 is vastly superior to 2018 and a solid step up over 2020.”
This expressive and full-bodied red also boasts a 91-point score from Wine Spectator, who called it “ripe, silky and refined…alluring.”
The Perrins “routinely produce long-lived classics that are among the finest in the world,” according to Robert Parker—and Jean-Pierre, François, and Pierre Perrin have a deep affection for the mistral-swept terroir of Vinsobres. The cooler climate and high elevation produce a level of finesse in Syrah that’s often lost in warmer climes.
Vinsobres, on the other hand, is a small, relatively steep-altitude appellation—an area that’s an Eden for Syrah, and Perrin’s Les Cornuds comes from one family-owned plot there.
The 2018 was one of our most popular Rhône offers last year, scoring dozens of four- and five-star reviews from our members, and the ‘19 is a more-than-worthy successor from an even better vintage! If anything, it’s even more charming out of the gate, with an engaging personality that rewards you from the first sip.
