The elements:
- A small, family-run winery in Pauillac that rubs elbows with legends like Mouton-Rothschild and Latour
- A BRILLIANT Bordeaux vintage that some have compared to 1982
- The inspired hand of world-renowned consulting enologist Michel Rolland
- 97 points and a Platinum Medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards
You might ask how it’s possible that this wine—the 2019 B de Fonbadet, which Decanter called “beautifully aromatic”—wound up in our hands. It’s simple: We fell so hard for this Bordeaux that we imported it directly, which means that no middlemen got between you and all its gorgeous red fruit.
Fonbadet began to take shape in the early 20th century, when Pierre Peyronie and his wife Jany—managers at Château Lafite-Rothschild and Château Mouton-Rothschild, respectively—began acquiring overlooked parcels in Pauillac Today, the estate is overseen by their great-granddaughter, Pascale Peyronie, who brought in star enologist Michel Rolland in 2014 to play a role in winemaking and blending decisions, which has had a lot to do with Fonbadet’s burgeoning quality.
For the B de Fonbadet, the incredible 2019 vintage played a role too. Jeb Dunnuck compared 2019 to one of Bordeaux’s greatest vintages of all time, saying that “there were numerous times while tasting through these 2019s that I had the impression that I was tasting a modern-day version of the 1982s.”
The 2019 B de Fonbadet comprises 40% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 30% Merlot from the family’s holdings outside of Pauillac in AOC Bordeaux. We can’t think of a better way to accompany a grilled rack of lamb with a ragout of porcini mushrooms and thyme this spring. You’re going to rip through your case faster than you think!
