2018 Tasca d’Almerita Tenuta Regaleali Grillo Cavallo delle Fate Sicily

Sicily has long been the source of some of Italy’s best values, but Tasca d’Almerita’s 92-point Cavallo delle Fate Grillo pushes the quality level up a notch. A signature white from a Wine Enthusiast  Winery of the Year, its bright, textured personality is winsome—the essence of their beautiful Mediterranian climate in a bottle.

Tasca’s combination of brightness and texture makes for a wine that’s easy to love—and outrageously good for the price. Fans of Sauvignon Blanc, Grüner Veltliner, and unoaked Chardonnay will find a lot to love here, but the wine is distinctly Sicilian, with echoes of the Mediterranean Sea in every sip.

It’s almost impossible to find a better example of Grillo than Tasca d’Almerita’s. Bright and intoxicating on the nose, the scents of preserved lemon, green mango, and pine nuts draw you in, hinting at a palate that delivers a salty-accented tour of green apple, smoky flint, jasmine, and tart peach flavors. It’s bracing and lively, but there’s a natural richness to the wine that comes solely from the grape—there’s no oak aging here at all.

Grillo is the signature white grape of western Sicily, where warm breezes from the sea meet cool air currents coming off the ferocious Mt. Etna. It once played a key role in making the area’s Marsala wines world-famous—but modern approaches to the grape have revealed it’s even better in dry, crisp form.

Tasca d’Almerita’s Regaleali estate sits in an improbably lush spot—a literal oasis in the middle of scrub-filled hills. There, 8th generation owner Alberto Tasca has transformed expectations for sustainability in viticulture—and the wine shows a liveliness and personality that only comes from grapes grown in living soils as part of a diverse ecosystem. It also helped net the winery the title of European Winery of the Year’ from Wine Enthusiast, who praised the winery’s “commitment to sustainable viticulture” as a major factor—along with the stunning quality of their wines.

Given their worldwide accolades, it’d be easy to imagine that their prices would skyrocket, but they take their duty as stewards of Sicilian wine seriously—and want Grillo in as many glasses as possible. We’re happy to help them with that.
