farmers, cellarmasters, and barrel brokers who might be unknown to the wider public but are celebrities to those who work in the California wine biz.
Tony Lombardi is industry FAMOUS. His family has lived in Sonoma since the ‘40s, he’s been in the wine game for nearly his entire adult life and has built a web of connections along the way—oh, and he happened to be the brand manager for a tiny winery named Kosta Browne during their rocket-like ascent.
When we get a call from Tony, we’re always thrilled—our members have enthusiastically snapped up every wine we’ve offered from him. So when he recently told us he might have a little back-vintage Chardonnay hiding in the cellar, we weren’t going to let him get off the phone until we got it.
Grown on a 30-year-old dry farmed vineyard on Russian River’s famed Eastside Road in one of Wine Spectator’s favorite-ever vintages for the grape, Tony’s 94-point 2017 Sonoma Coast Chardonnay is in full song right now, having blossomed with a little time in the cellar.
For this wine, Tony and winemaker Cabell Coursey tapped Orsi Vineyard, a hidden gem of the Russian River Valley. The Orsi family has been growing grapes in Sonoma for over 30 years, and their sustainably farmed vines excelled in 2017, a year that Wine Spectator ranked as one of Northern California’s greatest Chardonnay vintages to date.
The wine was fermented and aged in 40% new French oak barrels for 15 months to achieve the perfect balance between richness and brightness. Now, five years later, it’s in peak form.
