In the heart of Bolgheri, home of $200+, 100-point Super Tuscan Goliaths like Ornellaia and Sassicaia, I Greppi is the undaunted David that stands tall without the prohibitive price.
Unfazed by the superstars, this 2017 Greppicante flaunts the depth and balletic power that has made Bolgheri Italy’s finest region for Bordeaux-style blends, and the site Wine Spectator called “Tuscany’s Napa.” The Greppicante is a conduit of violet, raspberry, and graphite, mystifying with each head-tilt toward the glass. Bold dark cherry with savory underpinnings linger as long as we did on that candlelit Tuscan terrace the first time this wine bewildered us.
That bold complexity has garnered Greppicante releases critical flattery over the years. Vinous’ Antonio Galloni has long been a fan, calling past vintages “impeccable,” praising their “outstanding balance and tons of style,” and fondly remembering how the Greppicante “made me smile, and after tasting hundreds of wines from Tuscany that is no small feat.” That marathon tasting likely contained some of the region’s best wines, and in the end, the Greppicante was the one that left Galloni grinning.
We had a similar experience. Fatigue was no match for this wine’s power and structure, which dominated our conversation that night… and the next, when we couldn’t resist getting a few more bottles. An overachiever from a must-know region and celebrated terroir, we are thrilled to share this rare wine with Wine Access members.
Winemaker Alessandro Landini, whose wines at Viticcio have inspired repeated Wine Access sellouts and five-star reviews, has turned that high-profile land into a seriously dynamic and aromatic red.
Like other Italian wine regions, Bolgheri’s winemaking history stretches back to ancient times. Unlike other regions, it’s skyrocketed to international fame in the last 60 years, taking the prices of its top bottles with it. That comparatively recent acclaim, however, is good news for us, because it means every so often, you can find a gem (like the Greppicante) tucked away in Bolgheri’s incredible terroir, if you know where to look.
