2017 Domaine du Chateau de Messey Chardonnay Les Crets Macon

2017 is already in the books as one of the greatest white-Burgundy vintages of the century—and by now, most of its wines are long gone.

That’s because in-the-know collectors quickly recognized the year as an instant classic, so they snapped up as much as they could—which means the 2017 Les Crȇts, from Château du Messey, is an extra-special find. 

Made by an estate whose vineyards date back to the legendary Abbey of Cluny—home of the monks responsible for what we think of as modern Burgundy—this is a standout wine from a region whose star is on the rise.

Now that it has a little bottle-age under its belt, it’s drinking absolutely beautifully, showing off the bright mineral tones of the vintage and the glorious fruit of the Mâconnais. 

One of the things we learned early in our wine careers was that it’s important to cellar less-expensive wines. Bottles don’t have to boast knee-buckling prices to improve with time—and we’ve had some of our most mind-blowing experiences from low-cost wines that have blossomed with a little slumber.

That’s the Château du Messey Les Crȇts. It’s the sort of white Burgundy seasoned pros cellar to wow their friends without busting their budgets. Aged in a combination of oak barrels for depth and texture and stainless steel for brightness, it’s emblematic of the “new” wave of Mâcon producers challenging the Côte d’Or for Chardonnay supremacy in Burgundy.
