2016 Chateau Ramafort Medoc Cru Bourgeois Bordeaux

From a historic estate that was planted and modernized by the Domaines Barons de Rothschild, Château Ramafort is an outstanding Bordeaux red backed not just by us, but by the world’s top wine critics and New York City’s elite sommeliers.

Lafite-Rothschild produces bottles that routinely go for four-digit prices, and the family behind that famed château is extremely selective about their land—but in 1973, Château Ramafort captured their attention. They purchased the property, and over the next two decades proceeded to overhaul the vineyards to attain the quality associated with their name—and those same vineyards are responsible for this bold and sophisticated 2016. 

The first Médoc vineyard to win the Coupe des Cru Bourgeois in 1995, Château Ramafort’s wines now boast the winemaking expertise of 99-point Lynch-Bages alum Magali Guyon, who has been with the estate for 20 years. She’s crafted wines that have appeared on wine lists at iconic NYC restaurants like Buddakan, Barbounia, Hunt & Fish Club, Benjamin Prime steakhouse, and Brasserie Felix. 

While many Médoc wines boast the power and heft commonly associated with the renowned Pauillac, this one strikes a sophisticated balance with the type of grace you might find in celebrated regions like Margaux or nearby St.-Estèphe. An even 50/50 split of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot gives the 2016 Ramafort excellent balance and contemplative depth. The wine opens to a mosaic of black currant, plums, savory herbs, and toasty oak, and reveals intimate expressions of earthy-fruit character that resonate alongside silky tannins—and it’s some of the best pedigreed Bordeaux you can find for the price.
