This 2015 Chardonnay exemplifies what Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate was talking about in describing Woodlands’ “small quantities of high quality wines, that sit amongst the best in the area.” To understand why, look no further than the stunning 2015 Chardonnay. Lavish stone fruit and grilled tropical fruit aromas, brioche, with apricot and Anjou pear, creamy with excellent acid structure — no wonder James Halliday, the leading Australian wine critic  awarded it 94 points. When we told our buddy at Langton’s — Australia’s leading auctioneer of fine wines — about our allocation of 2015 Woodlands Chardonnay, he was astonished: “How?” We kept tight-lipped. “Demand for Woodlands offerings is through the roof,” our Langton’s friend told us — fetching more bids than any other estate. In 1973, when the Watson family first planted vines in Margaret River, they became one of the five founding families of the appellation. The hilltop plantings on gravelly loam soils, just a mile from the Indian Ocean, exuded greatness from the outset. Over 40 years later, Margaret River is known around the world for its lush Cabernet Sauvignons and elegant Chardonnays —  and Woodlands is the best of the best.

2015 was a watershed year for the Watson family for two reasons. First, a growing season marked by little rain yielded an unusually small crop of tremendously concentrated Chardonnay. Then, following a very successful harvest, the Watson family rolled out brand-new technology for destemming grapes. Both gentler and more effective than commonly used equipment, the Watsons’ new cellar acquisitions ensured an unprecedented level of fruit quality. The result is vibrant, refined, and quite frankly, must be tasted to truly appreciate.
