In a superb growing season like the one Loire Valley experienced in 2015, offering a “mix of perfect ripeness and well-structured, concentrated juiciness” according to Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the results can be extraordinary. Releases from the likes of Alphonse Mellot and Domaine Vacheron can fetch upwards of $60 or $70/bottle. That makes this citrus-kissed 2015 Domaine Roger Champault Blanc “Les Pierris” — from fifth-generation vignerons who have made domaine-grown Sancerre since 1850 — all the more irresistible at just $19.99.

The Champault family estate is comprised of 50 acres of vines, on average 30 years in age, which inhabit gentle slopes with ideal orientation for the region. These hills are home to two of the most prized soils in Sancerre: terres blanches (white stones), which lend richness and complexity, and Oxfordian caillottes, which provide this wine with exquisite mineral precision.

In 2015, a warm, dry spring gave way to a hot and sunny summer, making for smooth sailing through August. The call to harvest came early at the start of September and by then, the Sauvignon grapes planted in the chalky hillsides at Domaine Roger Champault had ripened to perfect maturity. The vintage’s only downside? A relatively low yield, driving already steep prices even higher. Thanks to a long-standing relationship with our importer, we were able to buck that trend, making this elegant, mineral-infused Sancerre Blanc available to Wine Access clients for just under $20.
