2015 Albert Bichot Domaine Long-Depaquit La Moutonne Monopole Chablis Grand Cru

Rarely Seen Magnum of Top-Monopole Chablis

When Sur first tasted this wine, he knew he’d discovered something rare that we had to offer our customers. Last month, while walking the vineyard with winemaker Cecilia Teimaille, he had the incredible experience of sniffing and sipping this 95-pointer while the hallowed ground in which it was grown crunched beneath his feet.

Indeed, in the entire region of Chablis, the Moutonne monopole is one of the most remarkable vineyards: While not officially classified as a Grand Cru, it’s such a special place that the Burgundy Wine Bureau has allowed it to be labeled as Grand Cru since the 1950s because of both its location—it’s comprised of parts of Preuses and Vaudésir—and its history of achieving the same elevated level as the seven “official” top vineyards in the region.

We like to think of La Moutonne as “the insider’s Grand Cru,” and this 2015, in hyper-rare magnum format, is a transporting example. In its 95-point review, Wine Enthusiast loved that, “in this sumptuous year, the wine is more generous, ripe yellow fruits than mineral texture,” yet still seriously age-worthy. Vinous, in its 93-point rave, adored its “savory flavors of lemon drop, minerals, menthol, mint and hazelnut. Quite smooth in texture for such a powerful grand cru but still youthfully tight. The very long, subtle, slowly mounting finish saturates the palate with dusty extract. This remarkably tactile wine boasts outstanding potential.” We couldn’t agree more, especially as this particular offer is for a magnum, a rarely seen format that promises decades of evolution in the cellar.
