When a renowned Napa power player joins forces with a top-tier Barolo house rooted in the traditions and terroir of Langhe, the result is a bottling you come across maybe once in a decade.
The gorgeously orchestrated 2014 M.A. Monticelli Pietrin Barolo is the fruit of a partnership between Anna Monticelli—an alum of Château Cheval Blanc, Seavey, and Bryant Family Vineyard—and the Franco Conterno family.
It was introduced to us by a friend whose palate is attuned to New World richness and bold California concentration, and who favors $150+ blue-chip Napa Cabernets. So when he came to us with a Barolo he called the best Old World red he’d had in ages, we were beyond intrigued.
Our curiosity was immediately replaced with a wave of awe as the swirling aromatic bouquet transported us to a forest floor strewn with rose petals and tertiary cigar-box depth, mixing with orange-peel verve and cinnamon spice. Seven years of graceful aging has polished the mouthfeel to cashmere softness, and the finish seems to have no end. We immediately knew that our members would adore this wine.
This is where Old World elegance meets New World polish and power. The sumptuous body clearly owes a debt to Anna Monticelli’s Napa education. With her experience working at Bryant alongside 100-point winemaker Philippe Melka, no wonder our California collector friend wanted to snatch this up by the case.
The blue-blood Piedmont breeding comes courtesy of the Conterno clan. A Barolo powerhouse, they’ve owned the Cascina Sciulun property in the hamlet of Bussia di Monforte d’Alba for generations, and that gave Monticelli sought-after access to the vineyards known for yielding Barolo’s biggest, richest wines—Pugnane, whose hills produce immense structure, and Panerole, where clay soils are associated with a style known for youthful elegance.
Monticelli meticulously assembled this vibrant blend of crus, using native fermentation and a 24-month rest in Slavonian oak—before 12 months in bottle—to create a Barolo whose dual lineage we’ve truly never encountered before.
