“Enough is Enough”

Last summer, as you may recall, WineAccess made a decision to move all of our logistics operations from Oregon to Napa. We chose a partner company that, on paper, seemed perfectly suited for the task. No longer would there be lengthy delays between orders and shipments, we were assured. A second warehouse in the midwest would be fully operational by May 15 making summer shipping a piece of cake. By all accounts, all was progressing according to plan…until, of course, it wasn’t.  

Without sharing the gory details of the legal spat that followed, suffice it to say that in the last weeks of December, we terminated our contract with the first company and signed on with their primary competitor. The transition, as you might imagine, was challenging. There were thousands of cases that needed to be counted and then recounted when inventory numbers didn’t match up (don’t get us started!). Then all had to be hauled from the two existing warehouses to the new. We budgeted 2 weeks for the transition. We were back in business in only 12 days.

That’s the good news. Here’s the not so good…at least for the accountants. As expected, as we managed to somehow lose a few hundred cases in the shuffle, bottles never made it where they were supposed to go. Rather than counting, recounting and then rerouting the stragglers, management said “enough is enough”…and ordered us to “BLOWOUT THE BITS AND PIECES.”

As we reported in early spring, young winemaker Teddy Crochet has really come into his own since the tragic passing of his father, Dominique. While making the rounds in Bué-en-Sancerre, Crochet’s 2014 stood shoulder to shoulder on our scorecards with the new releases from Dominique Roger and Vincent Pinard. Now that buyers have weighed in, it’s clear that the WineAccess membership sees this one as we did. 4.53 stars out of 5 — the highest rating ever garnered by an estate-grown Sancerre.

The 2014 Dominique et Janine Crochet Sancerre is brilliant pale-green, infused with mouthwatering aromas of ripe apple and pear, orange pith, and anise. Broad and juicy yet tightly focused, combining saline minerality with ripe citrus and apple flavors, the finish is textbook Sancerre, showing off excellent penetration and length — arguing gracefully for a 4- to 6-year rest in the coolest of cellars.
