Rare Allocation of the Wine “Redefining California Pinot Noir”
In the Wall Street Journal’s “The Rock Stars of Pinot Noir” feature on Anthill Farms, the publication pointed to the three partners lead by Anthony Filiberti, all Williams Selyem alumni, calling them part of a “generation that’s redefining California Pinot Noir.” While Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate waxes lyrical that their wines are some of the most “graceful Pinots being made in California today,” that are “distinctive and well deserving of serious consideration.” Perhaps that’s no surprise given that Filiberti learned to make wine at Bergstrom Winery, Hafner and under the great Bob Cabral at Williams Selyem. Our own Master Sommelier Sur Lucero MS echoes those statements. While working at Thomas Keller’s The French Laundry, “we were among the first to carry Anthill,” says Lucero. “They have amazing pedigree and their wines have great finesse and aromatic intensity.” Just 75 cases of the 2014 Anthill Farms Anderson Valley Pinot are up for grabs, crafted in the Williams Selyem style from Kosta Brown-owned Cerise and Demuth Vineyards, along with Comptche Ridge and Baker Ranch. Elsewhere up to $50, today from Wine Access an incredible $35 on this coveted wine.
As winemakers, Webster Marquez, Anthony Filiberti and David Low made wine in Oregon and Virginia, and in California at Williams Selyem before forming Anthill Farm in 2004. In their first year, they produced merely eight-and-a-half barrels of wine, farming many of the small plots from which they buy their grapes, selecting the best for their small production Pinots.
These days, they make eight single-vineyard Pinots and two appellation wines annually, their wines expressing the deeper, darker, more elegant fruit flavors common to the Anderson Valley. Why? Proximity to the Pacific — some vineyards are just 15 miles from the ocain — warm days cool down significantly while under a blanket of oceanic fog, and crisp, cool nights result in Pinot Noir bunches that retain scintillating acidity — and that translates to a vibrant freshness in the finished wine.
