Reignite Your Love Affair with Brunello

Some vintages are bound for greatness from the very beginning. Others take several years before their potential can be fully understood. The 2013 Brunello di Montalcinos are very much part of that first group: 2013 is one of the most sought-after vintages from the storied Tuscan perch in recent memory. No wonder: With a long growing season, cooperative weather as harvest neared, and generally excellent fruit quality, the top producers in the region had all of the tools at their disposal to craft wines of elegance, longevity, and flat-out deliciousness.

In 2013, Talenti produced a Brunello of impeccable balance, with lifted aromatics of dried red fruit, licorice, and menthol anchored by bass notes of black truffles and morels. Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate awarded it 94+ points, praising its “lively and bright” bouquet “with loads of primary fruit at its core.” As soon as our team tasted it, we fell in love. The best vintages, and the top wines from those fortuitous years, tend to do that to us.

Wine Enthusiast called them “stunning” and “radiant” overall, noting that, “If you want to experience the energy, elegance, and ageworthy structure that first drew wine lovers and collectors to Brunello di Montalcino decades ago, then 2013 is your vintage.”

And within this already sought-after vintage, the 2013 Talenti Brunello di Montalcino is a standout, the culmination of years of vision, work, and patient dedication. Back in 1981, after already having made his name at Il Poggione, Pierluigi Talenti started his own winery, and in the process forever changed his beloved region.

The gorgeous Talenti estate, now guided by Pierluigi’s grandson Riccardo, is perched on a mountaintop overlooking the picturesque Orcia River valley near the medieval Sant’Antimo monastery. Incredibly, the wine is even better than the view. Before planting his vineyards, Pierluigi spent substantial time researching the most suitable Sangiovese clones. The vineyards, planted in clay and marly soils with abundant rocks at 660-1,320 feet, benefit from a valley location that provides just the right amount of cooling. All told, the vines enjoy a microclimate most winemakers can only dream of.

If you visit Talenti’s lofty perch, you’ll also witness vineyard care and winemaking elevated to their highest levels. Grapes are harvested by hand to preserve quality, and are de-stemmed and hand-sorted to ensure that only perfect berries go into the wine. They are aged in casks made from Slavonian and Allier oak, imparting just the right amount of influence to structure the wine while allowing the Sangiovese to shine. The wine gets its beauty sleep in oak for 30 months and then rests for another year in bottle before hitting the market.
