Hot off the press — in a just-published 95-point review, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate said the 2013 M. Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole “shows excellent depth and generosity with lively fruit flavors.” Antonio Galloni called it “precise, aromatically expressive and beautifully delineated” in his review. Given the scores, and the price, we call our 30-case allocation truly worthy of Wine Access Barolo enthusiasts’ attention.

For 118 years, the Marengo family has been the stewards of just under 15 acres of vineyards in Barolo. Three of those acres are planted in the famous Brunate Grand Cru, while two acres fall within the Bricco delle Viole Cru vineyard — a high-elevation site that, according to Vinous, “yields lifted, silky Barolos.” None more so than the 2013 M. Marengo Barolo Bricco delle Viole.

The Marengos’ prized section of the Bricco delle Viole Cru vineyard was planted in the 1950s, and produces old-vine Nebbiolo of uncommon grace, personality, and finesse. In an extraordinary vintage like 2013, this well-tended plot delivered a sculpted masterpiece of striking floral aromatics, cherries, and Mediterranean spice — a captivating modern expression of one of Barolo’s highest-elevation vineyard sites.

It’s rare to find balanced Barolo that so beautifully honors such a proud parcel of historic family vines. It’s rarer still to find one with a 95-point Wine Advocate score at at this price
