Made from 100% Chardonnay grown on soils that mirror the chalky plains of Champagne, Ferrari’s Perle Metodo Classico is Champagne in everything but name—which is why the Italians keep this for themselves, drinking over 80% of Ferrari’s production locally. 

Made in the same, labor-intensive method as Champagne, the Brut Perlé perfectly marries the briskness of high-altitude fruit with the richness and depth gained from long aging on the lees. Tucked into the southern end of the Alps in Italy’s northeast, Trentino is ground zero for méthode champenoise wine in The Boot. 

Offering a kaleidoscopic nose of fresh green apple and Asian pear, white flowers, brioche, and fresh rain, this wine is as striking as the mountain terroir that lends it its freshness and crisp, mouthwatering acidity. 

This Italian classic mirrors Champagne not only because of Trentino’s chalky soils, but because founder Giulio Ferrari studied winemaking in Épernay, Champagne. At the turn of the twentieth century, he brought Chardonnay vines and Champagne know-how to Trentino. Over a century ago, and 70 years before Franciacorta, Ferrari saw the potential for greatness in this mountain terroir.  

Years later, having no children to take on the winery, Ferrari sold to the Lunelli family and stayed on as an adviser for the rest of his life. Today, the third generation of Lunellis continues the proud traditions of quality established by Giulio. 

Every acre of Ferrari’s vines is farmed organically, and the harvest is by hand. A strict berry selection is done at harvest and only the best grapes are used, 100% Chardonnay for this cuvée. After the second fermentation in bottle that yields those precious bubbles, the wine spends over four years on the lees, slowly developing the depth and complexity that make this one of the world’s great sparklers.
