Clerico’s Ciabot Mentin “Shines Bright” in 2013

As one of the most passionate standard bearers of the Piemonte region, Domenico Clerico dedicated his entire career to expressing the minutest nuances of Barolo through his intensely detailed wines. Vintage after vintage, his Ciabot Mentin bottling has been heralded as one of the most expressive, age-worthy, and evocative in the entire appellation. The 2013—one of the last that he personally worked on—is a fitting tribute to both the place itself and the man who shepherded it from the vineyard to the bottle.

In its 97-point love letter, Wine Advocate pointed out that even within the entire lineup of 2013 Clerico Barolos, this particular bottling “shines bright…As with past vintages, this wine is distinguished by the intense inner energy it delivers from deep within and by the unyielding nature of its textural richness.” In other words, it’s a wine that, though we found it to be utterly delicious after a brief stint in the decanter, will reward extended cellaring. Given a few years of rest, it promises to fully show exactly what has made this particular expression of Barolo such a benchmark over the years. It’s the very definition of a wine for the ages.
