A Trip Back In Time with Gilles Corsin and the Hotspots of NYC

In New York City, the hottest restaurant names on the street are Daniel, Bar Boulud, Gramercy Tavern, Le Bernardin, and most recently, Eleven Madison Park, with 3 Michelin stars and ranked #3 on Pellegrino’s 50 best restaurants in the world in 2016.  While a lengthy Who’s Who of White Burgundy from Chassagne-Montrachet to Aloxe-Corton fills out the pages of these wine lists, just a few producers are necessary when it comes to Saint-Véran and Pouilly-Fuissé, the most storied appellations of the Mâconnais. The top domaine is that of Gilles and Jean-Jacques Corsin, whose recent vintages of Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes have blown away the competition for the toughest spot on the lists. It’s not too hard to figure out why.

Since our first visit, we’ve tasted in the Corsin cellar 32 times. Each time, Gilles and Jean-Jacques start us off with the current vintage, before leading us back 10, 20, 30 years, to taste older Chardonnays drawn from growing seasons much like the last.

One afternoon in Davayé, over 20 years ago, Gilles Corsin uncorked a couple ‘78s. Then he ducked into the cellar and took us back in time — to 1973, 1969, 1964, and 1959. While the ‘64s were beginning to show their age, the other Chardonnays were magnificent, still youthful — even the ’59s, more than three decades after bottling!

Which older vintage seems to most resemble the just-released 2013 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes? Gilles says 1988. If so, 2013 Domaine Corsin Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes is not only one of the most complex under-$30 Chardonnays we’ve come across this year, but this stunning new release will also still be in perfect form in 2038!!

Drawn from 50+year-old vines planted in Solutré and Fuissé in the center cut of the storied appellation, Domaine Corsin’s 2013 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes is golden in hue. The aromas are of ripe apple and pears, laced with quince, intensely mineral, almost saline, with spiced, smoky oak. The attack is texturally rich, finely layered, and perfectly poised and restrained, full of personality, and persistent. The best part? If you can resist polishing off a bottle on night one, you’ll be stunned again on night two, and delighted on night three and even four!

Don’t take it from us. Just ask the sommeliers at Daniel, Bar Boulud, Gramercy Tavern, Le Bernardin, and Eleven Madison Park. $75+ on those wine lists. Today only $25.99/bottle. Shipping included on 4.
