The Conterno Name, An Epic Barolo Year

After tasting the 2013 Diego Conterno Barolo, we snatched up the entire East Coast allocation – we aren’t waiting until most reviews are published and prices soar. Diego Conterno’s vines are in Monforte d’Alba, just up the slope from Giacomo Conterno, and we’ve never tasted a better vintage from him.  You heard it here first: 2013 Barolos will go down as one of the finest vintages since 2010 and 1996. Italian wine expert Antonio Galloni leads the pack in recognizing that 2013 contains a “pedigree and class that are the signatures of the best Barolo vintages,” producing “gorgeous Barolos with striking aromatics, silky tannins, sculpted, vibrant fruit and mid-weight structures.” Just 40 cases before the open market, and that’ll be it for the vintage.

Being born with the name Conterno in Barolo is like having the name Ferrari in Modena, a shorthand for class and high quality. Diego Conterno’s hillside winery overlooks the world-famous village of Monforte d’Alba, surrounded by vineyards. Diego and his wife Anna have 19 acres of vineyards in the village, including 5 in the Grand Cru of Ginestra.

The 2013 Barolo blends grapes from some of those Ginestra parcels with some from San Giovanni and San Pietro. The crushed grapes spend 28 days on skins then aged in large “botti” barrels and cement vats. It’s rare to find balanced Barolo that so beautifully exemplifies the finest sites of Monforte d’Alba. If you love Barolo, do not procrastinate on this one.
