“Huge Strides” in Quality Delivers “Excellent Value” Grand Cru Red Burgundy

Dating back to 1928, Domaine Michel Juillot has always produced high quality wines that over-deliver value for their prestigious appellations. The domaine is about 75 acres, with vineyards based mostly in the hamlet of Mercurey. The crown jewels of the Domaine Michel Juillot’s holdings are on the hill of Corton in both Corton-Perrières and Corton-Charlemagne.

Of the two Grand Crus expertly tended by the well-respected and talented Laurent Juillot, he’ll tell you, if you press, that his hands-down favorite site is the Corton-Perrières.

As you trek up the hillside, the soils closest to town are rich in clay. But as you climb up to 1,000 feet above sea level, sizable chunks of dimpled limestone appear. As in the most sought-after Grand Crusof the Côte de Nuits — Rousseau’s Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Domaine de la Romanée-Conti’s La Tâche, Christophe Roumier’s rich and ethereal Bonnes-Mares — that unique soil mix accounts for both the wild-berry concentration and the electrifying, age-worthy backbone of Juillot’s Corton-Perrières.

In good vintages, Juillot’s Corton-Perrières is sweetly perfumed, floral, and finely delineated. In great vintages, it’s even better — and for Laurent, 2012 chez Juillot stands shoulder-to-shoulder with 2010 as the finest of the new millennium. The 2012 Corton-Perrières Grand Cruis deep, dark, and richly textured, a Red Burgundy that will drink beautifully over its lifetime.

Deep ruby-red color with dark toned aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, black pepper, and licorice. The palate offers extraordinary ripeness but the wine’s mineral lift and intense sappiness gives it a weightless impression. Finishes with incredible length and energy. Drink now to 2037.

92 points from Burghound’s Allen Meadows, who added, “Juillot has made huge strides in wine quality, particularly on the red side and they typically represent excellent values.” That’s never been more true than today: $99 on release. $82 this morning — every one of the 180 bottles in our allocation snatched right from the dank, humid cellar of Domaine Michel Juillot
