Tiny-Production Cru Barolo
The brilliant 2012 Ciabot Berton Barolo Roggeri won gold at the 2017 Decanter World Wine Awards, where it garnered 95 points from the judges, who hailed its “aromatic herbs, leather and spice,” and “great tannic structure and fresh acidity.” Coming off a performance like that—and coming from a producer like Ciabot Benton’s Oberto family—we wouldn’t bat an eye at an $80 price tag. But at $44.99, which is 43% off the release price, this is an all-out coup: an outstanding Barolo that displays smoke, worn leather, tobacco, beautiful aromatics and a long, supple finish. And the best part is that every last U.S.-bound bottle of this tiny-production Barolo is allocated for Wine Access clients. Collectors, move quickly: This is a steal at $44.99. Shipping included on 3 bottles.
The Oberto family, proprietors of Ciabot Berton, have been in Piedmont for centuries. The estate itself dates to 1876 and has been family-run for its entire history. The latest generation, Marco and Paola Oberto, learned the craft of winemaking from their father, Luigi, who learned from his father, Giovenale, before that. History runs deep here, as does the family’s commitment to tradition.
The Obertos harvest tiny hillside plots in La Morra, including the meticulously tended Roggeri vineyard, a south-facing, 10-acre parcel that receives bountiful sunlight due to its elevation at 900 feet. The 40-year-old vines of Roggeri are planted in the deep, clay-rich soils that are renowned for yielding an ethereal, perfumed style of Barolo.
The 2012 Roggeri is fragrant and finessed, boasting ripe red cherry fruit, vibrant acidity, and noble, chewy tannins that will facilitate another decade in the cellar. At just $44.99/bottle we highly recommend the 2012 Roggeri by the case: It’s the perfect amount to watch this unique Barolo unfold over the next decade. If you possess the patience.
