Extreme Winemaking and a “Drop-Dead Gorgeous” Red  

You can search the world over, but you will not find vineyards more beautiful than Marisa Cuomo’s on the stunning Amalfi Coast. A wonderland of vines and rocks gazing over the sea, soaking up Italy’s sun and the salty sea air. Extreme hillside vineyards, rooted in rocky soils, perched on terrifyingly steep cliffs, sometimes growing horizontally. If you’re lucky enough to draw breath and gaze on these terraces, prepare to have that breath taken away.

Beginning in 1980, Marisa Cuomo, Andrea Ferraioli, and renowned oenologist Luigi Moio have crafted wines of true terroir from this truly unique Furore landscape. Incredibly small yields from handpicked grapes harvested late — well into October — spend 12 months aging in new French oak barriques, rounding out the wine’s mineral edge while showcasing the dark-berry fruit, brushwood, and black pepper notes of the Piedirosso (locally known as Per‘e Palummo) and Aglianico grapes. Then they are aged in atmospheric wine cellars dug straight into the rocky cliffs.

Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate called Marisa Cuomo’s 2010 Costa d’Amalfi Furore Rosso Riserva a “gorgeous red wine that reflects the spectacular beauty of the Amalfi Coast,” and rated it 93 points. Gambero Rosso awarded this blend of Piedirosso and Aglianico grapes its coveted Tre Bicchieri (Three Glasses).

This is a wine meant to age and unfold over the years, a painstakingly-crafted love letter to the rugged Amalfi Coast. Go ahead and call it heroic.
