Burgundian Purity in Bordeaux
In addition to their grands vins, Bordeaux estates traditionally produce a second wine, available at a more modest price and geared toward earlier drinking. Mouton Rothschild’s second wine, Le Petit Mouton, is sourced from younger vines on the Mouton Rothschild estate, but vinified with the same meticulous attention to detail as the Grand Vin.
Hailing from a 98-point vintage—one of only five seasons in the past four-plus decades to have reached that level of excellence—the 2010 Petit Mouton won unequivocal praise from Wine Advocate, whichcame right out and called it: “one of the best ever made,” comparing its level of purity to that of Burgundy.
The label for Le Petit Mouton is based on a design by French poster artist and designer Jean Carlu, who first contributed his work to the 1924 vintage of Mouton. The stunning art-deco label, which features a stylized bunch of red grapes, stands out among the much more traditional packaging of Grand Cru Bordeaux.
