There are high-scoring wines, and then there are high-scoring wines like this—bottles that reshape what you thought you knew about an entire category. This 95-point blockbuster—which Wine Advocate called “a great and really delicious 2009 vintage Champagne that drinks beautifully today and will continue to do so for at least the next 10 to 15 years”—has everything going for it. A remarkable growing season produced virtually perfect fruit, all of it from vines of more than 50 years old grown in the Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. Fermentation in Burgundian barrels. 96 months of aging on the lees. Dosage of only 4 grams. And if that weren’t enough, Egly-Ouriet itself resides at the apex of the Champagne hierarchy. “Make no mistake about it…these wines are at the very top of the pecking order in Champagne today,” gushed Antonion Galloni of Vinous.
