We’re all fans of Château La Croix’s Pomerol.

We have it on good authority that this very vintage has been served not only to the President and Prime Minister of France, but also to the French Senate. There’s no wonder why: La Croix’s vines sit an easy 5-iron away from those of Le Pin—which, at $4,000+, is one of the single most expensive wines in Bordeaux—and the 2009 offers a glimpse into Pomerol’s seductive style for a fraction of the price.

With just 10 hectares under vine, Château La Croix doesn’t make much wine, and we secured a rare cache of the estate’s premier bottling. Made in the legendary 2009 vintage, these half-bottles come straight from the estate’s cellars. 

On release, Robert Parker called the 2009 Bordeaux harvest “the finest vintage I have tasted in 32 years of covering Bordeaux” and the wines have delivered in spades over the course of their lifetimes, and Right Bank wines are starting to reach their prime. 

This one of La Croix’s greatest-ever bottles, and it’s drinking perfectly now, with beautiful baked red-cherry and blueberry compote and silky tannins gilded with hints of extra-dark bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and hints of roses and tobacco. We jumped on this lot the second we saw that some might be available—the opportunity was that rare, and the wine is that good.
