2008 Hesperian Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley

The 2008 Hesperian Cabernet Sauvignon — a blend of pristine Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from select vineyards in Rutherford, Yountville, Coombsville, and Mt. Veeder — is a wonderful opportunity to savor the complexity and mellowed textures of a majestically-aged Napa Cabernet at nearly 10 years old, direct from Hesperian’s cellars. But it’s so much more, too: After the devastating fires that ravaged so many homes and wineries in Napa in October 2017, Hesperian winemaker Philippe Langner opened up his cellars to release the last 100 cases of this remarkable 2008.

Philippe’s winemaking career has taken him around the world: from California to Bordeaux and South Africa and back again. At Rothschild-held Château Clarke in the Médoc, Langner worked alongside Michel Rolland, the man responsible for some of the world’s highest-scoring and most notoriously rare clarets and Cabernets. After returning to Napa and spending a decade as head viticulturist and winemaker at Sullivan Winery, Philippe settled into his own stellar project at his current 14-acre plot on Atlas Peak in Napa.

When the firestorm came, Philippe had to evacuate his Atlas Peak home in the middle of the night, the flames lapping against the edge of the house. The following day’s revelations — most of his vineyard was spared, but home and office were reduced to ashes — came with one silver lining. Philippe had always set aside several cases from each vintage and stored them at an off-site cellar; selling some off would help him recover. We’re so lucky that he held back 100 of the mere 486 cases of the 2008, because they have aged beautifully.
