The 2023 Chateauneuf du Pape from Comte de Lauze offers up aromas of dark berries, licorice, spices and Provence herbs. Medium- to full-bodied, firm and muscular, it’s framed by assertive tannins, culminating in a robust, somewhat rustic finish. This blend of 70% Grenache Noir and 30% Syrah—grown entirely in galets roulés soils and matured in a combination of foudres and large barrels—is a structured, rather old-school effort, though it doesn’t possess quite the elegance of the vintage’s best examples.
