Margaux is one of the world’s greatest wine regions, and Robert Parker called Château d’Issan “consistently one of the great wines of the appellation.”
D’Issan is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, and wines from their walled-in vineyard were served at the marriage of Eleanor of Aquitaine to Henry II—and that was back in 1152. These days, the estate boasts the expertise of Eric Boissenot, the coveted consulting winemaker who counts Latour, Margaux, Lafite, and Mouton Rothschild as clients.
Less than a five-minute drive from both Château Palmer and the appellation-defining Château Margaux, d’Issan’s terroir is some of the most coveted in Bordeaux. Yet they only deem about half of what they produce as suitable for their grand vin—their standards are that high.
After the grapes have been carefully hand-harvested and pressed, the wine—in the 2022, a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 2% Cab Franc, 2% Malbec, and 1% Petit Verdot—is vinified parcel by parcel in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. Boissenot allows for the Merlot to go through malolactic fermentation in barrel, and the Cabernet in tank, enhancing fruit flavors and softening the wine, followed by a careful blending selection and aging in 50% new French oak.
The result is a wine that deserves its standing as the #1 wine of the year. We recommend a six-pack, so you can show this off at the table for the next 25 years.
