A Fairytale White Bordeaux
There’s a story behind the name of Aile d’Argent, Mouton Rothchild’s Bordeaux blanc, and it’s well worth telling.
When Philippine de Rothschild was a little girl, her father, Baron Philippe, made up a fairy tale, whose hero was a magical teapot called Aile d’Argent, or Silver Wing. Young Philippine was enchanted by her father and his story.
When World War II broke out, Baron Philippe was arrested. And in jail, he wrote down the story of Aile d’Argent, strictly from memory. Eventually, the tale that delighted Philippine as a girl and sustained Baron Philippe during his time in jail was published in France, and endures as a symbol of the unassailable love between father and daughter.
The wine that bears the Aile d’Argent name is one of the most fascinating white wines we’ve tasted. Aged in 50% new oak, the wine is bursting with white peach, tropical notes like mango and citrus, and a super-compelling flintiness and salinity. Truly a gem of Bordeaux blanc.
