Legendary Broadbent Family’s Highly-Decorated Sparkling Wine House
Champagne collectors — it’s time to familiarize yourself with one of England’s great sparkling wine estates. Our Chief Wine Officer Matt Deller, MW tasted 32 English sparkling wines as a judge at this year’s TEXSOM International Wine Awards, and was blown away by the overall quality of English sparkling wine. He was particularly awestruck by this Gusbourne Brut Reserve, which is easily the equivalent of $80+ vintage Champagne. Deller and two other Masters awarded it a Gold Medal saying that Gusbourne is “at the top of the English sparkling wine pyramid,” calling it “Champagne-esque,” and adding “yet with distinctively English elegance and elderflower purity. Extremely complex, and well worth seeking out!” Importer Bartholomew Broadbent, son of legendary wine writer Michael Broadbent, MW, is putting his full weight behind the 2013 Gusbourne Brut Reserve, and he’s not the only one that’s been giving this English countryside sparkling producer serious love. Produced from some of the first vines Gusbourne’s visionary owner Andrew Weeber planted to the property’s loamy soils, this sumptuous Brut Reserve is one of the greatest introductions we can think of to sparkling wines from a region in England that is going to be a major competitor of high-caliber Champagne soon enough — you can say you heard it here first.
Gusbourne’s estate modern legacy begins in 2004 when South African native Andrew Weeber planted 15 acres of vines on an old farm in the English countryside. Soon, 15 acres became 20, then 50. Today, over 150 acres of vines are spread across vineyard blocks in Kent and Sussex. With the help of Broadbent, Weeber’s vision is poised to expand around the globe.
The 2013 Gusbourne Brut Reserve is a blend of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, and Chardonnay from Weeber’s original Kent vines — painstakingly hand-harvested by winemaker Charlie Holland and his seasoned team. The lateness of the U.K.’s 2013 harvest produced an abundance of high-quality grapes, which ripened very slowly, ratining dazzling acidity — all of which Holland transforms into a refreshing golden bubbly packed with mouthwatering bright fruit essence and nuanced spice.
