Robert Mondavi couldn’t resist Viña Caliterra. 

He looked at Eduardo Chadwick, the vintner whose red wines would come to outshine 100-point bottles from Lafite-Rothschild and Margaux…

He looked at the windswept hillsides of Chile’s Colchagua Valley, a region Wine Enthusiast called “more capable of producing world-class red wines” than any other in the land… 

And he said: “I want in.”

We get it. We have ever since we first sipped the 2017 Caliterra Edición Limitada A, alongside parilla-style ribeyes in a dimly-lit Santiago restaurant. That night, lost in the wood-ember atmosphere and gorgeous wine, we echoed Wine Advocate: They called the 2017 “impressive” in their review, which came with a 92+ point score—the kind you don’t often see on under-$30 wines in places like Napa Valley. 

Founder Eduardo Chadwick is the man behind Chile’s first 100-point wine. He also organized the famed 2004 Berlin Tasting, which did for Chilean wine what the 1976 Judgment of Paris did for California. Chadwick’s wines claimed the top two spots, ahead of 100-point bottles from the First Growths. 

Chadwick started Caliterra in the 1990s, partnering with Robert Mondavi. The 2017 Edición Limitada A comes from Chile’s prestigious Colchagua Valley. It’s a blend of Malbec and Carmenère—Chile’s quintessential variety, which delivers a spicy and herbal complexity that merges seamlessly with bold, lush Malbec. After 18 months in 16% new French oak, the result is a deep red wine laden with notes of rich chocolate, pepper, mint, and herbs.
