In 1882, his first year working a harvest at Graham’s, the Scotsman Andrew James Symington and the Graham family set aside three barrels of that vintage’s finest Port.
Through two world wars and the digital revolution, the wine has matured and mellowed. And only this year, after 140 years of meticulous tending by generations of Grahams and Symingtons, did the winery declare one barrel of this priceless Port to be ready for release.
Now the 1882 Graham’s Ne Oublie Port is here, and it might be the most fascinating wine we’ve ever offered. It’s the fruit of an almost unfathomably far-sighted vision that Andrew Symington and the Grahams had a century and a half ago, and it is astounding.
“The density and purity of this port is astonishing,” wrote James Suckling in his 100-point review, which captured his awe quite nicely. It “gets fresher and fresher on the palate. Goes on for minutes. Leaves me speechless.”
Andrew Symington’s family finally purchased the Graham’s winery from the Graham family in 1970, and they have become one of the most respected Port outfits in the world. The remaining two casks of Ne Oublie—which is French for “Do Not Forget”—will be bequeathed to the next generation of Symingtons.
The decanter that holds the wine was handmade in blown crystal by Portuguese glassmakers Atlantis, its shape inspired by the classic bulb form that typified 19th-century bottles. The silver neck collar and coaster come from Scottish silversmiths Hayward & Stott, while the leather case comes from London’s’ Smythson of Bond Street, who adhere to the craftsmanship that founder Frank Smythson practiced since founding his luxury leather boutique in 1887.
