Money can buy many things—but it can’t buy you history. And history in a region like Tuscany is priceless.

Tuscany’s old families, like the Antinoris and the Frescobaldis, still dominate any discussion of the great wines of the region—but the Sergardi family has been making wine in the rolling hills outside Siena for 23 generations, all the way back to 1349. Unlike their more famous peers, their wines are much harder to find in the US, with more limited production levels and intense demand in Europe.

The Sergardi’s Simbiosi bottling has been unavailable on these shores until this standout 2019 vintage—and even then, you’d be hard pressed to find a bottle of this Super Tuscan until our Master Sommelier locked this down. It’s a 95 point triumph, made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, that tied MUCH more expensive names like Frescobaldi Mormoreto ($90), Montepeloso Nardo ($106), and Massetino ($434).

The I Colli estate sits in the northern part of the Tuscan province of Siena, and is the source for some of Bindi Sergardi’s most coveted wines. The property is blessed with soils rich in the coveted “Giallo di Siena”—a yellowish calcareous rock that’s the substrate for the famed Tuscan marble of the same color. In the vineyard, though, it produces wines with exceptional balance and harmony.

For the Simbiosi, which is named in honor of the marriage between the Bindi and Sergardi families that gives the winery its name and coat of arms, that translates to a blend of Cabernet and Merlot that stands with much more famous names in quality and complexity—but at a price that belies its place among the blue-chip wines of Tuscany.
