Our Head of Wine, Master of Wine Vanessa Conlin, is beyond discerning when it comes to rosé Champagne. But when the wine team got together to barbecue and test-drive a few new bottles at Vanessa’s house, the star of the show—and the first to vanish—was the Moutard Pere & Fils Rosé de Cuvaison Brut.

Vanessa says, “The fruit is vibrant and maintains that crisp freshness that I expect in a great bottle of Champagne. I absolutely loved it!” Bold, full of electric strawberry and raspberry fruit plus a crisp minerality, it joins a rarefied list of bottles that set the bar—which includes names like Billecart-Salmon, Ruinart, and Brugnon—so any and all bubbly fans ought to pay attention and add this to their cellars as well.

The Moutard family has been farming in the Côte des Bar village of Buxeuil since the mid-17th century and has a long tradition of quality wine production. Pinot Noir is king in the fashionable Côte des Bar, a warm, southern sub-region of Champagne that’s home to stars like Cédric Bouchard, Vouette et Sorbée, and Marie-Courtin. Here, vineyards rooted in clay-limestone soils checkered with Kimmeridgian bands lend themselves to rich, fruity Champagnes with a different minerality than those made in the chalkier subsoils of the Marne in the north.

First and foremost, the Moutard family are growers. While they are technically registered as a négociant, 85% of their fruit is from their own farm, giving them firm control over their hand-harvested fruit—a key to quality.

This Rosé de Cuvaison Champagne is simultaneously charming and serious, brilliantly fruity, and refreshing. Empty bottles don’t lie!
