2014 Louis Latour Pommard AOC

The best bottles of Pommard Pinot Noir are downright magical, and with a decade of age, can be life-changing. And whether they’re young or have time in the bottle, they can be unbelievably expensive: Domaine Leroy’s Pommard goes for $320, his Premier Cru Les Vignots commands $1,040. Coche-Dury’s Les Vaumuriens is $215. 

Fortunately, Louis Fabrice Latour still believes excellent Burgundy should be priced for everyone to enjoy, and his 2014 Louis Latour Pommard represents some of the best value—not to mention quality—on the planet. So when he offered us this dark, brooding, muscular Pinot Noir, we jumped at the chance. 

French poet and author Victor Hugo consumed copious amounts of Pommard in the 1800s—he kept a glass handy while he penned The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Les Misérables, and famously described the wine as “night in combat with day.” It’s the perfect description of this 2014 Louis Latour from the Pommard AOC. Here’s why:

Pommard Pinots, like this Louis Latour, are deeply colored wines, with dark fruits and rustic, muscular, complex tannins. Those are the “night” elements. But excellent Pommard from a great producer will show lift, grace, and elegance, presenting a cascade of intricate aromatics and flavors redolent of blueberry, blackberry, and cherry pit, along with rustic earthy notes. These are the fresh and expressive “day” elements. 

Pommard lies between the town of Beaune and the village of Volnay. It’s a hilly, quaint town surrounded by vineyards that produce Pinot Noir wines that have long been revered by Burgundy lovers. Writing about the 2014 vintage, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate noted that the best bottles “often borrowed the exuberance and vitality from their Volnaysian neighbors,” counter-balanced by their own “inherent austerity.” In translation, the wines marry a bit of Volnay’s freshness with their own complex tannic structure and rusticity.
