Finding top-quality estate-aged Burgundy is one of the greatest challenges in the wine world. It’s made in such limited quantities that it quickly disappears into collectors’ cellars, rarely to be seen again. That’s why it’s such a coup that we can present the 2001 Domaine de la Vougeraie Réunion de Famille—a classic bottle of Old World Pinot that’s been aged by the winery to perfection.
We’ve been laying the groundwork for this offer for years, helping connect Vougeraie’s incredible wines with our members, who’ve made them one of our most requested Burgundy estates. It was only on our last trip to Burgundy, though, that we finally managed to secure stocks out of their library, at a price barely higher than their current release.
We had wrapped up our tasting of a slew of astounding wines at the Domaine de la Vougeraie, when our host told us that he had one more treat in store. He rushed down the cellar steps. Moments later, wine from a dusty, unmarked bottle was in our glasses.
It was obvious that this bottle was in a beautiful stage of maturity, old enough for a panoply of secondary notes to emerge: A layer of dried violet, truffles, and forest floor scents float above dried strawberry aromas to form a nose that’s beguiling and captivating. The palate is electric and alive, but showing the kind of complexity that only age brings, with flavors of bright red cherries, dried thyme and rosemary, hints of leather, and Douglas fir. Most importantly, the texture is pure silk—an absolute pleasure to drink.
Our assumption was that this was a well-aged Premier Cru bottling, so when we found out it was their Bourgogne, we were stunned. Nearly two decades of aging had turned a modest bottle of Burgundy into the mother of all butterflies, and so we had to ask… was there any way they’d part with some? As a treat for our members?
As you might expect, there’s not a lot of this jewel available, and once we dug a little deeper, it began to make sense that this bottle punched well above its price. Sourced from vineyards in Gilly-lès-Cîteau, a stone’s throw from the Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru, the ‘01 is made from raw materials equal to wines twice its price.
With its pedigree, age, and perfect provenance, this is a bottle that shouldn’t be available in today’s marketplace.
