From the densely packed Grands Crus of Gevrey-Chambertin to the sacred plots of Vosne-Romanée, a tiny strip of land in the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits puts forth the most exquisite Pinot Noir on the planet—the kind for which collectors will happily pay four and even five digits per bottle. It’s where village wines can not only fetch $100+ prices, but actually merit them.
That’s why we’re so thrilled when we can offer a wine like the 2017 Domaine Anne et Hervé Sigaut Les Charrières Morey-St.-Denis Premier Cru. Grown just below the storied Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche, it’s a revelatory Pinot that lights up the senses, conveying the magic of this incomparable place.
Anne and Hervé Sigaut manage an estate that dates back to the early 19th century. Maurice Sigaut bottled his first wines in the 1950s—he started with a Premier Cru Les Sentiers from Chambolle-Musigny—and in the 1970s, his son Hervé took over. Decades later, in 2004, Hervé’s wife Anne joined in, and she is now in charge of the estate.
With eight of their eleven wines coming from their home village, Sigaut is a Chambolle-Musigny domaine through and through, but they apply their meticulous vine-tending to two parcels in Morey-St.-Denis: Les Millandes, and the 5.6-acre Les Charrières.
Very few producers have access to Les Charrières, which sits on an east-facing slope of marly limestone, just below the Grand Cru of Clos de la Roche. The soil of Les Charrières is shallow and well-draining, encouraging the 25- and 65-year-old vines to dig deep for water reserves, resulting in Pinot Noir boasting beautiful concentration.
