Gevrey-Chambertin is one of the most storied villages in Burgundy—and the Trapet family is woven as tightly into the village’s finest fabric as any.

Trapet has a history dating back to the 1870s, they’re one of the largest landholders in the Chambertin Grand Cru, and the prices their wines fetch speak to their status: Their Grands Crus can breach the $600 mark and their Premiers Crus can cost over $200. Prestigious wines like these dominate the Trapet portfolio, leaving collectors little opportunity to taste the glory of their tradition for anywhere near an earthly sum.

That’s why we’re so thrilled to offer their 94-point 2017 Domaine Trapet Père et Fils Ostrea cuvée. From seventh-generation vintner Jean-Louis Trapet, it’s a stunning Burgundy bearing the kind of quality you expect of a Premier or Grand Cru.

This is as good as village Gevrey-Chambertin gets—a bottle that ranks with the supreme efforts from the vintage that Vinous calls “a modern classic.” Grown on 90-year-old vines in oyster-shell-studded soils, it was brought to fruition by Jean-Louis’s attentive biodynamic farming and flawless expertise in the cellar. Four fossil-rich parcels planted as far back as 1919 help invest this firm, focused bottling with its mineral-inflected character.

Grapes are harvested by hand, then sorted in the vineyard and again at the winery—a rigorous process that may cull as much as 10% of the total harvest. From there, Jean-Louis employs 30% stem inclusion to bring savory notes to the fore. Punch-downs occur early in the fermentation process, then pump-overs are used to help absorb tannins in the must.

This is the work of a Gevrey-Chambertin master at the top of his game. Don’t pass it up.
