When we heard the name of the virtually unattainable plot where Weston Eidson sourced this small-production Pinot Noir, our jaws literally dropped. It’s a renowned site in Sonoma’s Fort-Ross Seaview—a place Wine Spectator recently hailed as “Pinot’s Magical Kingdom.”
We knew that Eidson, the brilliant young talent behind the bestselling Silver Ghost label, was well connected. He had a head start with mentors that included Russell Bevan of Bevan Cellars and Jason Moore, the brains and inimitable palate behind Modus Operandi.
By the time he made his first vintage, Eidson was tapping sites like Sonoma’s iconic Bacigalupi Vineyard and chatting up Steve Matthiasson to nab grapes from the California guru’s famous Linda Vista Vineyard. Still, sourcing fruit from a top site in Sonoma’s rugged Fort-Ross Seaview sub-AVA for this 2021 Montagu is a masterstroke of its own.
Located among towering redwoods, the remote but sun-blessed vineyard features prized, well-draining Goldridge soils. The terroir produces Pinot Noir grapes with vibrant acidity, dark-cherry-and-cola depths, and ripe soulfulness.
Wine Spectator recently hailed Fort-Ross Seaview as “one of the most unique wine districts in the world.” It’s still wild—only 2% of its total acreage is planted to vines—and full of tricky, steep pitches and dense forests.
That made it a perfect source for Eidson’s Montagu label, which is dedicated to carving out extremely limited wines from iconic sites. This release yielded all of 360 cases, imprinted with the low-yield intensity and small-berry complexity of the vintage.
