This artery, cutting straight through the most coveted villages of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, is for cult Burgundy estates what Route 66 is for Americana.

Savigny-lès-Beaune sits too far west to pull most wine tourists off D974’s scenic route, which is why the commune has long been overlooked or thought of as a backwater where rustic wines get blended and sold generically.

But we consider that a blessing, because this is one of the precious few remaining parts of Burgundy where you can still find amazing deals like Domaine Chanson Père et Fils’ marvelous 2017 Savigny-Dominode Premier Cru.

From a vintage deemed “a modern classic” by Vinous, Domaine Chanson Père et Fils capitalized brilliantly on its La Dominode holding—one part of the dazzling jigsaw puzzle of Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites the estate has acquired since 1750—“one of Savigny’s most prestigious premier-cru sites,” said Wine Enthusiast.

Wine Spectator showered this bottling with 94-point praise—tying it with Grand Crus from producers like Olivier Bernstein, Jacques Prieur, and Arnaud Mortet—while Jancis Robinson gushed that it “bursts with ripe fruit—really quite exuberant,” calling it “Mouthfilling and beautifully composed.”

Vinified 100% whole-cluster to extract more color and boost structure and aromatics, the wine sees malolactic fermentation on the lees and restrained oak influence over 16 months of aging in casks. With additional time in bottle, it’s in perfect drinking shape right now, making it something that 99% of Burgundy is not: affordable and available.
