Chambertin is one of the most hallowed terroirs in the world. For some—including Napoleon, most famously—the famed Grand Cru is the absolute pinnacle of Burgundy.

And in 2020, you won’t find a better bottle from the site than Domaine Trapet’s.

Decanter rated it 99 points, behind only DRC’s Romanée-Conti and Roumier Musigny, which cost $25,000+ and $30,000+. Wine Advocate’s William Kelley—one of the world foremost experts on all things Burgundy—called it “a magical wine in the making” and “the king of the cellar” of this Gevrey benchmark.

The market for prestige Burgundy is famously efficient. Bottlings can go from $60 insider secrets to $1,000 collector mainstays in three or four vintages—so when a winery with stunning holdings like Domaine Trapet is in the middle of an “ongoing renaissance,” in William Kelley’s words, prices will go up in a hurry.

Very few estates in the world are as blessed with history or holdings like Domaine Trapet. The seventh-generation estate literally saved viticulture in Burgundy, grafting vines (which was illegal) during the phylloxera crisis of the 19th Century. They now have a bevy of prime parcels in Gevrey-Chambertin to show for their longstanding importance in the region. Trapet was also one of the earliest Burgundy estates to farm biodynamically.

The 2020 vintage is one of Burgundy’s best in recent memory, producing what Kelley called “arresting wines”—the “deep, saturated hues are immediately striking and without obvious precedent,” he said. But despite the concentration and power across the Côte d’Or, 2020 Burgundy retains a freshness and vibrancy that belies the warm nature of the year.

As with all Grand Cru Burgundy, this is painfully limited in production. Savor this wine.
