2020 Sori Della Sorba Nebbiolo Langhe

Carlo Mondavi is a Napa Valley native from a famous family. He could have easily found success focusing his energies at home.

But he’s also a man who follows his heart. It shows in the critically beloved RAEN wines that he and his brother make on the Sonoma Coast, and it shows in the absolutely gorgeous 2020 Sori Della Sorba Nebbiolo Langhe, a stellar bottle that will delight any Barolo collector or lover of Italian reds. 

The Sorì Della Sorba property called to Mondavi and his wife Giovanna, a Piedmont native whose family owns a venerable Barolo winery. Located just outside the Barolo zone, it was a land they knew they had to farm—and this Langhe Nebbiolo was a wine they had to make. They crafted it from their finest 1.2 hectares of own-rooted vines, which were planted as far back as 1955 in a picturesque hillside amphitheater.

This is a Nebbiolo with real old-vine gravitas and elegance. Of course, coming from Carlo Mondavi, it comes with high expectations—and surpasses them handily. It has beautiful aromatic tones of red cherries, dried strawberry, violet, and ruby grapefruit peel, and the intention and focus of the finish are fantastic. Though it’s drinking spectacularly now, it will age with grace for another 10+ years. 

It’s rare to find a spectacular Old World wine from a California luminary, and this one is a thriller. It’s the definition of irresistible.
