One of the Best Value Chablis in the Nation
The balminess of summer inspired us to undertake a quest to find the best value Chablis in the nation. After all, what better accompaniment to warm weather than a fresh, crisp, granny-smith Chablis. After tasting literally hundreds, we settled on this 2015 Domaine Bersan from father-and-son team Jean-Louis and Jean-Christophe Bersan. A pure and ready-to-drink snapshot of the stellar 2015 vintage, which James Suckling called “an across-the-board success” in Burgundy. The vines of the Bersans’ clay and limestone vineyards average 35 years of age, yielding gorgeous, flinty fruit whose freshness is enhanced by 8-10 months in stainless steel. Decanter rated the 2015 Chablis vintage a 4.5 out of 5 — this is a blockbuster white Burgundy value for under $25.
The Bersan domaine, which features a cellar from the 11th century, has been in the family since the French Revolution. But it was Jean-Christophe’s grandfather, Louis, who first planted their land in Saint-Bris-le-Vineux to vine just two generations ago.
The Bersans’ Chardonnay vines from four different vineyards, les Rosettes, Reugny, les Joiches, Sèche Bouteille, are producing vibrant, minerally Chardonnay that Jean-Louis and Jean-Christophe ferment naturally and age in stainless steel. In 2015, a warm early season and hot, dry summer enhanced the soft citrus fruit elements in Chardonnay, complementing the bracing leanness that typifies Chablis.
The village wines of 2015 are ready to drink now. Writing for Vinous, Stephen Tanzer contends that the vintage will yield “great early pleasure.” For the Wine Access clients who nab one of our 75 cases before the weather cools off, the pleasure will be all theirs.
